| DANIEL MAIA is a graphic artist, independent publisher, plus comics’ writer and sometimes columnist. Autodidactic since childhood, later studied Sequential Narrative and Drawing, at CITEN-Gulbenkian Foundation (1995) and Lisbon's National Society of Fine-Arts (1997-1999), respectively. Began activity in graphic arts in 1993 with a short-story on a high-school newspaper, afterwards publishing on magazines and fanzines, some of which self-published, and in 1995 co-founded Fantasia Studios, Portugal’s first group of comics’ artists. Acquiring a wide experience since, producing comics, illustrations, storyboards, plus art direction, started his own graphic arts studio in 2009, along with the publishing seal Arga Warga. Worked for USA market mainly through Art & Comics talent agency (2004-2008), and after participating in various anthologies, currently prepares a solo graphic novel. Occasionally provides articles for comics' media, coordinates workshops and initiatives for the artistic community, i.e. All-Girlz comics and CC: Cadavre Exquis project, amongst other events, such as ExpoBD’96 comics’ salon. Won several mentions and awards, such as the 3rd prize & critics’ choice award for Revelation Artist in a comics contest (1995); IV Central Comics Award as Best Portuguese Artist (2006); was selected in Marvel’s ChesterQuest talent search (2008); and in 2010, his All-Girlz titles won Best Fanzine & Best Short-Story categories in VIII Central Comics Awards. |
